Palestinians Complain Their Journalists Are Targeted

Palestinian journalists have complained Israel is “deliberately targeting” them.

Palestinian journalists across the Gaza Strip, who work for different Palestinian, Arab and international news agencies, are reporting that Israeli troops have “deliberately targeted” media while covering clashes between young Palestinian men and Israeli forces near the border fence between the coastal enclave and Israel.

Palestine TV reporter Sali al-Sakni told Ma’an on Sunday her and her crew had deliberately stayed away from the center of clashes near al-Bureij refugee camp, but that they were still “showered with tear gas” while covering the clashes.

She added that dozens of other reporters and photojournalists “wearing helmets and flak-jackets with ‘PRESS’ marked clearly,” were also attacked with tear gas in the area. Al-Sakni said three tear gas canisters were fired directly at her crew.

Similarly, cameraman of Palestine Today news agency Dawood Abu al-Kas was hit with a rubber-coated bullet in the foot while covering clashes near the borders opposite to the Israeli Kibbutz of Nahal Oz in the northeast Gaza Strip.

“I was trying to capture photos while standing near an ambulance more than 300 meters away from the border fence when I was shot,” al-Kas told Ma’an.

Al-Kas highlighted that he was wearing a flak-jacket marked “PRESS” during the incident.

The deputy speaker of the Union of Gaza Journalists, Tahsin al-Astal, said Israeli assaults against journalists are consistent with Israeli violations of Palestinian rights in general.

“The Israeli occupation carries out systematic assaults against journalists who work in the field to prevent them from telling the truth about the crimes the occupation forces are committing against the Palestinian people,” al-Astal said.

“These serious breaches are classified war crimes and violations to international treaties and conventions,” he said.

Al-Astal added that the Union of Gaza Journalists, “has updated the International Federation of Journalists of the terrorism against Palestinian journalists at the hands of Israeli occupation forces.”

Who knows what happened. What we do know is only last week, a palestinian terrorist wearing a jacket with ‘PRESS’ marked clearly on it, stabbed an Israeli soldier.

So there’s that. For all we know, some of these journalists were engaging in violence against IDF soldiers. After all, we know where they stand on terrorism. Take Palestine TV, mentioned in the story.

The palestinians cannot have it both ways. If they exploit the special status of journalists in a conflict zone, they can’t complain that others do not respect this status.

  1. In this conflict, it’s hard to tell the combatants from the non-combatants when it comes to the Palestinians and their propensity to use terrorist attacks to advance a political agenda. In effect, members of the Palestinian press are “embedded” with some of those “troops” who are fighting their Israeli enemy. The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict is a tough beat for anyone in the press to cover, really.

I would question whether they are journalists or hate propagandists. If the latter, they become legitimate military targets.

    1. “Palestinian Journalists” is already more takiya and kitman than I can handle for one day. Never mind “targeted”. lol

  3. Aussie Dave, there’s the problem. The Palestinians ARE allowed to have it both ways. They may be the only people on the planet with that status. The whole world gives them a pass for their terrorism. Not once have they been called on their murderous, racist actions.

  4. Target them all. They are either terrorists or supporters of terrorism. Both are war crimes and are subject to summary justice.

    They earned their status

  5. Just the term, “Union of Gaza Journalists” is SUCH an oxymoron that I wouldn’t know where to begin explaining it. The hutzpa is beyond belief.

If I were to translate the complaint into plain English it would go something like:

“Hey! Can’t you people see we’re making a movie here!!!!”
