Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, after the Knesset approved legislation requiring ratification by a national referendum for any peace deal involving withdrawal by Israel from annexed territory in East Jerusalem or the Golan Heights, November 2010.

“The Israeli leadership, yet again, is making a mockery of international law, which is not subject to the whims of Israeli public opinion.”

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, after the release of the Palestine Papers, January 2010:

Even though many ideas have been discussed by the two sides as part of the normal negotiations process, including some we could never agree to, we have consistently said any proposed agreement would have to gain popular support through a national referendum.

No agreement will be signed without the approval of the Palestinian people.
