Brian of London here: I don’t think Abbas was lying. It’s just what he said, and what the interviewer understood are completely different. As widely reported, including in Israel Hayom, arch terrorist and current Palestinian dictator (his democratic mandate expired many months ago and elections are nowhere on the horizon) is reported as saying:
The Arab nations should have accepted the U.N. partition plan in 1947, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Friday, about one month after he went to the U.N. to seek unilateral recognition of an independent Palestinian state.
In an interview with Israel’s Channel 2, Abbas conceded that “it was our mistake” for not agreeing to U.N. General Assembly Resolution 181, which called for the establishment of a Jewish state alongside an Arab state in the British Mandate for Palestine. According to Abbas, Arabs as a whole are at fault for rejecting the plan and should have acted like the Jews and established a state. “But should they [the Israelis] punish us for this mistake for 64 years?” he said, speaking in English
As usual, interviewer and interviewee are talking completely different languages. There is no way for our current malicious media to usefully talk to Abbas.
Abbas knows the Arabs were wrong to reject the plan, because he knows now it would have been better to take what was on offer, wait and then take over the whole country in a slow Jihad starting from a base of more than half of it.
What he means is in ’47 the Arabs gambled on a quick Jihad to get all of it and lost the gamble because Jews with their backs to the sea and absolutely nowhere else to go were a lot more motivated at fighting than Arabs from all over their vast lands with millions of square miles and many other Arab Muslim countries to go back to. At that time there was no Palestinian Arab identity then to fight for: it wasn’t created till much later!
It’s patently obvious that there can never be widespread Islamic acceptance of a Jewish state in all or any of Israel to all but those who choose not to see it. When Islam ceases to be a major guiding factor in the lives of Arabs, check again: I suggest it won’t till 50 years after they stop indoctrinating their kids in it.
