Hamas: Now You See Them, Now You Don’t

Watching the news reminds me of when I was in Gaza.

I know that many people say that Israel bombs indiscriminately, but when you are on the ground there in the middle of a major operation, it is horrible.

Tis is a picture I took of the American International School hit in Operation Cast Lead (2009). It was reported that Hamas was firing rockets from the school.
This is a picture I took of the American International School hit in Operation Cast Lead (2009). It was reported that Hamas was firing rockets from the school.

But, I’ll never forget one night, sitting in my apartment, watching television. It was warm so the patio door was left open, and I could see the building across the street from me. It was a huge house, 5 stories high, so there were tons of windows. Suddenly, enough light reflected off those windows to totally light up my flat like it was daytime. The boom I heard was so loud – I was terrified. I jumped straight into the air and came down crying – I didn’t know what was happening. It was then that I learned that Hamas had a facility about 3 blocks away and Israel had hit it. The night was subsequently quiet, so I was sure the intended target was hit.

What amazed me was the fact that this Hamas facility was so close to a “non-Hamas” neighborhood. It is not a secret and this is a common practice and I’m telling you, it’s frightening. Of course, my first thought was “Why is Israel bombing this neighborhood?” Then I was told about the Hamas facility. Yes, they do tuck their operations into residential areas and let civilians endure the consequences.

As soon as the facility was hit, there was no further bombing that night.

I attended church while in Gaza, and I was surprised to find a Hamas headquarters located directly across the street from the church, again in an area of Gaza City where I was told you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find Hamas supporters. I soon learned that the church has sustained damage during bombing one night.

When I worked in a school there, it was well known that Hamas occupied the high rise overlooking our school field. We could often see people staring down on us. The school kids would often stop and shout up at the people, telling them off, telling them to stop watching us. It was obvious to me that if that building ever became a target to bomb, the school would again sustain heavy damage. In fact, it did in the last large military action. Hamas is everywhere.

There seems to be no separation at all between terrorist and civilian areas, which is disgusting because they know there are civilians who don’t support them and yet they pop up everywhere.

  1. OMG. I am astonished – not by this story, but by its author! Ms. Todd, have you told the tale of your own adventure and evolution anywhere? I so very, very much want to learn it; the propaganda for the bad guys is overwhelming and colonizing most of the world around me, and a little cause for hope would help so much!

The backside to this story is that Israel takes every precaution to avoid civilian casualties. But Hamas deliberately uses civilians as human shields by hiding their rockets, bombs, and headquarters in civilian buildings with the cynical purpose of using the pictures of their destruction in the propaganda war.

Thanks for the first hand observation of how Hamas uses human shields.

The US had to bomb mosques when they were used for war. Israel has to do the same. Over 200 rockets have hit ever area of Israel in the last two days, some with 70 lb war heads supplied by Iran.

  3. Israel cant do what the US does without Bing condemned by the world including the west. The news loves to point out that 80 Palestinians have died from the Israeli bombardment. Over 600 targets are hit with large powerful explosives less then one person for each attack. Now that is tiring to protect the civilian’s. And Abbas calls this GENOSIDE yea by their leaders not Israel.
