Lucy is truly an inspiration, and it is Israeli Arabs like her, Sarah Zoabi and others who make me even prouder of this tiny country of ours.

  1. Abbas is a pathetic leader and guilty of anti-Israel incitement. But everything I’ve been reading lately in the American and Israeli press tells me that Abbas and the Palestinian Authority are hated by Palestinian youth almost as much as Netanyahu is. So why would young Palestinians be inspired to murder Israeli Jews by people for whom they have no respect? Social media seems to be playing a critical role in the current uptick in violence and it is not clear what the Israeli government is doing about that.

    1. Norman_In_New_York

Abbas does what he does because if he actually became the peace partner Kerry touts him to be, he would be unlikely to die a natural death. Meanwhile, if he continues to wear his dark suit, he will be praised as a moderate by diplomats desperate for success and receive hoards of cash from foreign taxpayers that he squirrels away.

I’m confident that the government of Israel will implement a winning strategy after every other alternative has been tried.

    2. My understanding is, the Arab street hates Abbas because they see him as too accommodating to Israel and the West (yes really!) and corrupt, as opposed to the honest, violent Hamas.
This is a result of over 30 years of Palestinian Authority school education and media broadcasts radicalizing the population; it’s gotten so bad that the PA itself is being outpaced by its citizens for hatred and bloodlust.
If you believe Jews are evil baby killers, etc. why would you trust anybody who is willing to collaborate with them on anything whatsoever?
Part of Abbas’s ratcheting up of incitement is to appeal to this audience, in order to prove his terrorist bonafides and secure his power base. Part of it is that he’s a genuinely nasty SOB on his own.
Meanwhile, the people are committing murder, less because they are following his dictats, but rather more because of the claims that Israel is threatening their precious mosque (which is a rallying cry they’ve been using to spill blood since the 1920’s) and because this fits the ideology these youths have been raised with to begin with (again, PA indoctrination. Note that most (all?) of these attackers were born since the PA was established as part of the Oslo accords.)
It’s all very sad, but sickeningly true.

    3. Because the Jew hatred is the one thing they agree on. It also absolves them of ANY responsibility they’ve got in maintaining their own status quo as a society. It’s a win/win for Abu Mazen.

    4. It’s not just their leadership, it’s the whole society from inside out. Young people are inspired to murder random Jews for being Jews because all of their society has raised them up to believe it’s the ultimate heroism and bravery. Their leaders praise them, their people hold them up as an example to others and their mothers are more proud of them when holding up their shahid photos, than when they were alive. It has been assumed that Israel needs to do something about it, that Israel needs to take responsibility, but actually Israel’s responsibility is for Israelis and to protect Israelis from the infestation of this sickness.

      1. Great explanation, Inessa. This captures the reality of the Palestinians’ attitude toward Israeli Jews (and probably Jews in general no matter where they live). My main beef with the current Israeli government’s approach in dealing with the Palestinians is why do you want to allow the product of generations of Jew hatred to be your next-door neighbors just an arm’s length away to be able to literally stab you in the back just for being a Jew? The separation barrier isn’t enough to prevent this and accepting the Palestinians as co-inhabitants in some kind of ill-defined, crazy quilt one-state solution isn’t enough either.

        1. At this point, my feeling is that Israel needs to stop being responsible for both sides in the conflict, since the other side is incompetent. If Israel can provide security on Temple Mount, but Jordan can’t maintain the administration and allows the security to be undermined, then Israel needs to take over. It’s what they are accused of anyway. Re borders, Israel is already a state. It should declare its borders officially and do whatever is necessary to protect them. Whatever is within those borders should be Israel’s business and no one else’s. Whoever inside Israel doesn’t like it, can move outside the borders, whether that is now Palestine, West Bank, Gaza, Hellhole or other. Again, it’s what Israel is accused of anyway. Jerusalem Arab residents should be offered a gradual integration with a view to become citizens of Israel or move to Palestine, but after a period of time, they need to choose. Any criminal activity by Jerusalem Arab residents should be treated as violent crime, none of this political criminals BS. Child criminals should be removed from their parents as you would a child from abusive situation. None of this is particularly original – there is a recent excellent article by Fred Maroun.

  2. Aharish is a Muslim Arab whose family lived in a Jewish town, and who went to a “Jewish” school when she was a kid.

Although Muslim and Arab, she sees the world very similarly to the way in which secular Israeli Jews see the world.

Her very existance, and her words in this speech, are proof that the problem is, at the root, one of culture. Arab Muslim culture in general has a problem with Israel. Aharish doesn’t, because she’s culturally different.

In fact, this is true for many Arab-Israelis, but usually to a lesser degree. She’s just one of the few willing to actually SAY it. The lack of willingness to say it is a big part of what leaves the field open for extremists among the Arab community (in Israel, and more so, in the West Bank and Gaza, not to speak of Jordan, Syria, Libya, Iraq, etc).

The Muslim Arab community needs to change some of its cultural beliefs and practices for this conflict to go away entirely. They need to become more like Aharish, who remains a proud Muslim Arab, but nonetheless is Westernized in her thinking. Absent this, the conflict will never really go away. With this, an added benefit will be nicer lives for ALL involved, STARTING with Muslim Arabs.

PROOF of this can be found in the much better economic circumstances of Christian Arabs vs Muslim Arabs in Israel. Does anyone seriously think that they get special state privileges that lead to significantly different outcomes? No. It happens because of a community-sponsored schooling system and a different overall cultural attitude. If Muslim Arabs make this shift, just like Aharish has done, the same will happen with them over a fairly short time.

Aharish is a leader by example, because she succeeds in saying what she does and doing what she does fully in the positive sphere. Kol HaKavod Lucy!

  3. I’m worried that as well as inciting Arabs, these scum will eventually bring about revenge attacks from Israelis. People can only be terrorised for so long. All this is pointing to becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. At the time, the “status quo on Temple Mount” wasn’t broken, but it’s like they want to taunt Israelis until they do the things they accuse them of. It’s like these people have no sense of self preservation. They live in the very area they claim, while claiming to be refugees from the very spot they are on. Do they want to be rounded up and expelled, so they can be double refugees? I feel like taking these Israeli Arabs and shaking them and yelling “what do you want”? Why can’t you just live a normal life? Their fellow Arabs are getting on dingys, risking their lives, to try and live a normal life, and these spoilt people can’t just live, without trying to murder people. Do you seriously think Israel doesn’t put a stop to this because they don’t have the capability? What do you think the Jews will do? Simply leave? And even if they did, what will the legacy for your new liberated society be? How long before you turn on each other, if this is the way you achieve your goals?

    1. “Do you seriously think Israel doesn’t put a stop to this because they don’t have the capability?”

We are routinely accused of attempting to put a stop to Arab violence with “excessive force”. A big, big part of me wants Israel to actually exercise its full capability so that these barabrians will finally really have something to legitimately yelp about. Sick of it all!

      1. Agreed. I feel that it’s time for Israel to decide firmly their position on security, their borders and border protection. Israel needs to stop being responsible for both sides in each conflict, since the other side is incompetent. If Israel can provide security on Temple Mount, but Jordan can’t maintain the administration and allows the security to be undermined, then Israel needs to take over. It’s what they are accused of anyway. If Abbas is busy inciting to violence, preparing generations for hate and delusional dreams of destroying Israel, instead of preparing them for a normal life next to Israel, the Israel needs to state its borders, and proceed to protect them. Whatever is within those borders should be Israel’s business and no one else’s. Whoever inside Israel doesn’t like it, can move outside the borders, whether that is now Palestine, West Bank, Gaza, Hellhole or other, should no longer concern us. Again, it’s what they are accused of anyway.

  4. I saw an interesting Italian film, based on true events, called “Land of Saints” – a magistrate started a program to take children away from mafia families, relocating them to foster families, so they would have a chance to grow up away from the violence and break the cycle.
Sounds like an idea. These parents who are willing to sacrifice their children and think their children are heroes because they murder innocent people, are unfit. Their leaders are delusional and unfit. Take the children away – they will have a chance to grow up like this amazing woman, Lucy.
