Know Your History: Sabena Hijacking Rescue Operation (NY Times May 14, 1972)

new series where I bring to you news from the newspaper archives to debunk common misconceptions about the Middle East conflict.

Remember when the New York Times fawned over Israel’s brilliant military operations rescuing innocent civilians from brutal palestinian terrorists?

Yeah, me either. But in 1972 they covered the Sabena hijacking rescue operation. The tone of the entire report is one of admiration. These days, they would likely condemn such an operation.

Note: I cannot provide a link to the full article since it is only available to those who have purchased a NY Times subscription. But I have provided a screenshot below.

By the way, the leader of the commando operation was some guy called  Ehud Barak, and it included some other guy called Binyamin Netanyahu. Both were disguised as aircraft technicians in white coveralls.
