Israel has won its first medal since 2008, a bronze by Judoka Yarden Gerbi.
Here are the final moments of her bout with Japan’s Miku Tashiru.

Watching that live, I have to say those with some of the most nerve-wracking moments I have witnessed. Although, granted, I am not familiar with the scoring system in Judo, so for all I know, it was un-losable at that point.

As usual, the medal ceremony was emotional. At least for Yarden, me, and I am assuming millions of Israelis and Jews around the world.

Apparently, Yarden mistook the medal for Chanukah gelt!

This is Israel’s 8th medal at Olympics, and the 4th in Judo. Who said Jews could not fight?
Well done, Yarden. You have provided some happiness to a nation that so desperately needs it right now.
