A senior Palestinian security official was indicted on Monday in an Israeli military court after last month being arrested for writing allegedly inciting posts on social media, alongside praise for senior Nazis, it was cleared for publication Tuesday.
Israel’s internal security service, the Shin Bet, in co-operation with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), arrested Muhammad Al-Sawiti on an unspecified day in August, the service said in a statement.
The statement said Al-Sawiti is a resident of Beit Awwa and described him as holding a senior position in the office of the head of the Palestinian security service in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.
He was indicted in the Judea Military Court on charges relating to “extremist content” posted on Facebook, “including a direct call to carry out acts of violence against Jews and words of praise, admiration and support for acts of terrorism,” the Shin Bet — formally known as the Israel Security Agency — said.Al-Sawiti also “posted photos of Adolf Hitler and Adolf Eichmann alongside expressions of longing for men like them,” according to the statement.
The IDF claims that posts on social media that call for or encourage others to commit terror attacks against soldiers or civilians can directly influence Palestinians to engage in terror activity.The IDF’s intelligence branch, in conjunction with the Shin Bet, has developed software which scours thousands of social media posts made by Palestinians to look for inciting material or posts that suggest an intention to carry out a terror attack.

As a reminder, one of the functions of the Palestinian security service for which he works is to foil attacks against Israel. We’d be excused for thinking he was not taking that particular role too seriously – or worse, actually aiding and abetting attacks.
