In May 1977, after Menachem Begin was elected Israel’s 6th Prime Minister, Time Magazine decided to describe him as follows:
His first name means “comforter.”
Menachem Begin (rhymes with Fagin) has been anything but that to his numerous antagonists.
Yes, really. Time thought it a good idea to “help with the pronunciation of his name” by invoking Fagin, the crafty old Jewish villain of Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
