For those who aren’t familiar with it, Rick and Morty is a popular and usually pretty hilarious cartoon. I have been known to indulge in it.
About three years ago, Israel made an “appearance” of sorts.
I have to admit the scene made me uncomfortable how it portrays Rick as being concerned with appearing antisemitic when discussing Israel. It seems to be playing in to a narrative of Israel-haters and actual antisemites.
I had, perhaps naively, assumed there was probably nothing more to it than their irreverence and political incorrectness. The desire to just piss people off for no other reason than pissing people off.
But it now seems to me that there may have been more to it.
The scene is from a 2017 episode named Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender, directed by a guy called Bryan Newton.
Newton recently defended Jemele Hill, the author who tweeted that America is just as bad as Nazi Germany.
When an anti-Zionist Jew came to Newton’s rescue so to speak, Newton’s hatred of Israel was laid bare
Newton is not listed as a writer of the Rick and Morty episode, so this is not proof that his views were injected into the show. But I suspect they were – or they were at least shared by the writers.
