Publisher of English Textbook Missing Unit on Holocaust: Someone Removed It Without Our Consent

Yesterday I posted about an English Language Arts textbook for grade 8 taught in Saudi Arabia, which was missing the second unit, which deals with the Holocaust.

I had assumed the publisher Savvas Learning Company had published this modified version in order to cater to Saudi sensibilities.

I was wrong.

The communications director for Savvas Learning Company has sent me the following:

STATEMENT FROM SAVVAS LEARNING COMPANY:
Savvas Learning Company upholds the highest editorial standards for the publication of our textbooks and learning solutions. We have never altered any of our programs to omit coverage of the Holocaust, nor have we ever given approval to a third-party to do so. Like all major K-12 educational publishers, Savvas includes a unit of the Holocaust in our Grade 8 curriculum. If that unit is missing from any version of one of our textbooks, then it would have to have been modified by someone without our permission or consent.

So it seems someone in Saudi Arabia (or even elsewhere in the Middle East) went to the effort to remove the unit. How unbelievably vile…and lame.
