The caftan has been worn by a number of cultures around the world for thousands of years, and is of ancient Mesopotamian (modern-day Iraq) origin. The thobe or thawb did not originate in the region of “Palestine,” but is rather general to the Arabian Peninsula and Middle East. The “palestinian” style thobe originated in the early 19th century, which is clearly way after the ancient Mesopotamians were walking around in caftans!
