Actor Liev Schreiber’s Moving Shabbat Sermon

I’m a big fan of actor Liev Schreiber as an actor, and have considered him to be also a mensch since learning of his support for Israel. And while he has not been the most outspoken celebrity in support of Israel since October 7 – his main focus has been Ukraine for a while now – he has nonetheless thrown his support behind us, whether it be signing the pro-Israel celebrity petition, or his various social media posts on the topic:

I say all of this as a preamble to a speech he recently gave at Temple Emanu-El in New York City, which although again focused on his work with BlueCheck Ukraine, does also reveal his love for his Jewish identity, while further indicating his pro-Israel views. Bonus: he shares a Torah lesson from the wonderful late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks:

I know some of you might be put off by his mention of the “Palestinian doctor who refuses to abandon his hospital and the patients he cares for.” But he does do that after mentioning “the actions of a 22-year-old medic in southern Israel, who throws her body into the line of fire to protect the people she loves.” And I have no problem expressing sympathy for Gazan civilians (assuming they are the innocent ones, and not the ones who provided cover and support for the terrorists, or even joined them in their despicable actions).
