The Black Student Union (BSU) at the University of Michigan has released a statement announcing its withdrawal from the TAHRIR Coalition, a nefarious group that describes itself as:
a movement dedicated to the liberation of all people. We advocate for resistance against systems of domination and struggle to destroy their manifestations at the University of Michigan, throughout Turtle Island, and across the globe. We act in solidarity with freedom fighters in Palestine and revolutionaries everywhere working to dismantle global imperialism, capitalism, white supremacy, and patriarchy.
In other words, an anti-Israel group that basically admits it supports terrorism.
But the BSU are not leaving because the TAHRIR Coalition supports terrorism. They are leaving because they discovered what many other Black activists have discovered about their so-called palestinian Arab allies: they are terribly racist against them.
While it is always great to see Israel-haters at each other’s throats, it would have been nicer to see them disavow their previous hatred of Israel and realize they are backing the wrong team.
Also, “the historical ties between Black and Palestinian peoples” are really not that deep, and certainly nowhere near the historical ties between Black and Jewish people, who stood alongside each other in the Civil Rights movement. Perhaps the BSU need to learn more about their own history, let alone the history of Israel.
Not to mention that promoting BDS (as they do) means they probably shouldn’t be using an Israeli product to build their website:
