New York Jets owner Woody Johnson yesterday fired coach Robert Saleh, reportedly because he was upset with his performance: a 2-3 win-loss record so far this year, but also a 20-36 record and zero playoff appearances since Saleh was hired in 2021 promising multiple championships.
And why (I hear you ask) would an Australian like me, who mainly focuses on Israel, Jews, and antisemitism as topics worthy of writing about, and thinks the Super Bowl is a big salad, while only really loving football of the Aussie Rules kind, mention this NFL news?
I am glad you asked.

‘Tis true that Saleh wore the Lebanese flag pin in what could be seen to be an inappropriate move, especially while Hizbullah has been raining rockets on Israel:

But according to ESPN, his being escorted to his car by the director of security was described as “protocol.”
While I cannot claim to know the real reason for his sacking, it does seem reasonable that he be sacked on the basis of poor performance. And while I can imagine the Lebanese flag thing probably didn’t help his cause, CAIR seem to be doing their usual “boy who cried wolf” shtick.
One thing’s for sure, though. Unlike Saleh, this tweet wins!
