Melbourne’s Cafe 1947 Serves Up “Intifada”

Cafe 1947 is a cafe in Boronia, Melbourne, Australia. The name clearly alludes to the year 1947, before the establishment of the modern state of Israel.

How do I know this? Oh, just a hunch.

Oh, and this lovely menu item:

Although there is something rather apt these days about associating the violent word “intifada” with tofu (not to mention “bacon”).

And they get bonus chutzpah points for serving bagels. If you’re going to name your cafe after a yearning for a pre-Israel past and serve up a “Vegan Intifada,” perhaps don’t build the menu on the back of a Jewish staple. But I suppose consistency was never the strong suit of those who want the bagels without the people.

But at least they’re honest in one respect. If you’re going to serve an “intifada bagel,” you may as well make it inedible.

The cafe currently has an average of 5 out of 5 after 36 reviews on Google. Clearly, from people unperturbed by the terror homage and cultural appropriation.
