Last year, I posted how the Ayat restaurant in New York hosted a free Shabbat dinner for (anti-Zionist) Jews, receiving backlash from the likes of Nerdeen Kiswani – despite the restaurant owners spreading their own brand of antisemitism and terror support.
A few weeks ago, it named its new location “Hinds Hall” after the moniker anti-Israel protesters at Columbia University gave to a campus building they occupied last spring.
I am happy to report that the owners have been served a nice dose of karma, with their Bay Ridge location being closed down due to health violations!

The violations included:
Food worker/food vendor does not wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet, or after coughing, sneezing, smoking, eating, preparing raw foods or otherwise contaminating hands or does not change gloves when required; Worker fails to refrain from smoking or being fully clothed in clean outer garments.
Poppy got sloppy!
Other violations include:
- Evidence of mice or live mice in establishment’s food or non-food areas.
- Live roaches in facility’s food or non-food area.
- Filth flies or food/refuse/sewage associated with (FRSA) flies or other nuisance pests in establishment’s food and/or non-food areas.
- Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use
Turns out the real occupation wasn’t a Columbia building – it was mice, roaches, and filth occupying Ayat’s Bay Ridge location.
There is a certain poetic justice in a restaurant that celebrates lawlessness on campus being shut down for failing to even manage the radical act of washing hands or keeping rodents out of the kitchen.
Here’s hoping their lack of hygeine extended to their other locations. From the River to the Sea, as it were.
