The last time I posted about Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham, aka Liam Dumbpig, Alan Shatter – the former Justice Minister of Ireland – was suing him for posting libelous things online. In particular, the legal action related to Cunningham’s false online claims that a meeting was scheduled between Shatter and Jeffrey Epstein.
I am not sure where things stand with this lawsuit, but what is clear is Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon apologised unreservedly and paid Shatter damages after posting the same false Epstein claim. As far as I can tell, Cunningham has not.
Now you might think that Cunningham’s legal woes would encourage him to do his due diligence when posting online.
You’d be thinking wrong.
The Community Note assigned to the post on X says it all: this was not a video of a Gazan girl maimed by Israel, but rather one of a Brazilian boy with a congenital condition.
Cunningham has since deleted the tweet without apologizing or admitting his mistake. Probably because he is not sorry he took the opportunity to demonize Israel. The fact what he posted was utterly false is not a learning experience, it is an inconvenience.
Now if you are reading this and are still inclined to give Cunningham the benefit of the doubt as a good man who deeply cares about human rights and has just been a tad careless in his pursuit of truth, justice and the Irish way – this might disabuse you of that notion:
But I will give Cunningham this: given he spent seven seasons convincingly playing Ser Davos Seaworth – an honorable man with courage, integrity and principles – the man can act.
