A new series where I bring to you news from the newspaper archives to debunk common misconceptions about the Middle East conflict.
The Israel haters make many claims regarding Israel and the Six Day War, including that we we started the war as an act of aggression.
On June 8th, the midpoint of the war, the New York Times published the below article, capturing the spirit of Israelis as they forged towards an important victory despite the odds. Note in particular the following:
- The NY Times acknowledging the Jews had been in control of the Old City of Jerusalem in the past, as well as having endured ‘centuries of agony’ – an admission of our long history in the land and city of Jerusalem way beyond 1948
- The fact that the vast majority of Israelis really did see this as an existential war
- The general tone of celebrating Israel’s victory, something we would never see today, especially from the Times.
Note: I cannot provide a link to the full article since it is only available to those who have purchased a NY Times subscription. But I have provided screenshots below. As usual, click on the screenshots to enlarge.
