Ali Abunimah does not have much to be too happy about these days, with more and more people seeing through his hypocrisy. But it’s the little things that please him.
And people criticizing or otherwise hating Israel.
“Fear of Donald Trump is not enough for me to support Clinton, with her record of corruption,” Sarandon writes. “Now that Trump is self-destructing, I feel even those in swing states have the opportunity to vote their conscience.”
Sarandon is not the first celebrity to advocate for radical change on these and other issues.
But the Hollywood star lists one objection to Clinton that does stand out: “She supports unconditional military aid to Israel.”
Even in 2016, it is still unusual for major Hollywood stars, even those who are vocal about left-wing politics, to take on Israel.
Perhaps this is another sign that one of the big taboos in American politics is being shattered.
Here’s the offending post.
I wouldn’t call that “slamming” CLinton’s unconditional support for Israel, but Ali is one for exaggeration and hyperbole.
Sarandon not being a fan of Israel is hardly news. She is far to the left even by Hollywood’s standards. For example, this is from an article on her from 2014:
Before the start of the second Iraq war, Sarandon talked with other Hollywood liberals such as George Clooney and Sean Penn, her old co-star from Dead Man Walking, as well as Michael Moore. “We tried to be there for each other. It’s not so much that you’ll never work again. It’s really the shunning thing that’s the scariest. From your peers.”
She is fairly immune to opposition. “Just the other day, I repeated some kind of statistics about the shelling of Gaza, that was a UN statistic, how many kids have been killed.” A few people replied, she said, with “things like, ‘Oh, and it’s all right for them to be shelling Israel – what, do you hate Jews?’ And my dog tweeted back, ‘I don’t think violence is the way to solve any problem.’” Penny, Sarandon’s Pomeranian-Maltese cross, has her own Twitter account (@Mspennypuppy) which, as you can see, is pretty adorable
Although I guess Ali and company would not have been too pleased with this story from earlier this year.
Israeli humanitarian aid organization IsraAID this month hosted Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon at a compound housing thousands of families that have fled the Middle East to find safety in Europe.
At the camp for displaced persons, IsraAID is running a psychosocial program, providing support to homeless and orphaned minors and training German civil servants and volunteers who are working at one of dozens of camps across Germany.
During the visit, Sarandon praised the work of the Israeli volunteers, saying:
“I had already met the organization IsraAID in Lesbos and I was impressed with their ability and the professionalism of the team, and so I decided to again join their initiative in Germany.”
Sarandon previously met with IsraAID workers at a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, where the Israeli group is still active in providing medical aid and psychosocial treatment to those fleeing the Middle East.
After visiting and even taking part in the IsraAID efforts, Sarandon donated equipment to help IsraAID in its ongoing work in Germany.
Alas, this does not seem to have been enough for Sarandon to change her approach on Israel. So Ali can be happy knowing this ultra-left liberal is critical of Israel, and he can go back to stalking animals with piece of mind.
