Electronic Intifada Gets Desperate; Claims “Rolling Stones: Boycott Israel FB Page” Is Zionist Plant

You can’t make this stuff up.

http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/benjamin-doherty/jta-jerusalem-post-fall-hoax-bds-campaign-aimed-rolling-stones

A fake boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign disseminated by pro-Israel media appears aimed to discredit Palestine solidarity activists.

On 13 February, several blogs and publications reported that the BDS movement has called on The Rolling Stones to cancel their recently announced performance at the National Stadium at Ramat Gan in present-day Israel.

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA)The Jerusalem Post and Algemeiner all cite an anonymous Facebook page called “Rolling Stones: Boycott Israel” as their only source.

However, the Facebook page is by all indications a deceptive hoax, including its false claim that it has been endorsed by The Electronic Intifada.

Attempt to discredit activists?

The perpetrators of the hoax may aim to discredit Palestine solidarity activists by making it appear as if BDS activists disseminate false information and post anti-Semitic and racist content.

Instead, the hoax exposes the low journalistic standards of the publications which reported it as truth.

False attribution and plagiarized content

Soon after the publication of the JTA report, a post was added to the Facebook page that is actually a near exact copy of a 2007 letter from the Palestinian Campaign for Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) to The Rolling Stones.

However, instead of the 350 signatories on the original 2007 letter, the perpetrators of the hoax attribute the letter to three signatories: “Electronic Intifada,” “Rolling Stones: Boycott Israel” and “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement.”

The Electronic Intifada’s executive director Ali Abunimah told me:

We did not sign this letter or have anything to do with it whatsoever. While The Electronic Intifada reports on the BDS movement and individuals who write for it – including me – may support BDS, we do not sign letters like this or endorse specific campaigns in the name of the publication. It should, moreover, be obvious to any serious journalist that the appearance of our name is suspect because the letter was not published on our website, nor did we disseminate it on our own Facebook page or Twitter accounts. The Electronic Intifada has absolutely nothing to do with the contents of the “Rolling Stones: Boycott Israel” Facebook page.

The BDS Movement Facebook page and website also make no reference to this alleged campaign targeting The Rolling Stones.

Creators unknown

The “Rolling Stones: Boycott Israel” Facebook page was created on 10 February by people whose identity is unknown. Its logo is lifted from the bdsmovement.net web site.

Some of the content can be found on other sites and is not original to the Facebook page.

No apparent effort was made by the publications who reported on the supposed campaign to contact any known activists to verify the content on the Facebook page. None of the stories mention any attempt to contact the maintainers of the hoax campaign page, either.

So far, there has been no call by any known BDS activists for The Rolling Stones to cancel their show.

The statements on the Facebook page, some of which were reported to be anti-Semitic, are made anonymously and cannot be attributed to known BDS activists or groups with established records.

Anti-BDS page participants

The firstposts on the page are stacked with hostile comments from people attacking the alleged BDS campaign.

JTA and The Jerusalem Post should have been suspicious that Zionists were the very first to be informed about the existence of the campaign while Palestine solidarity activists and BDS movement sources were completely in the dark about it.

False claim of victory

At 22:30 UTC on 13 February, the hoax Facebook page posted a message claiming victory:

Our sources with The Rolling Stones confirm that there will be no announcement about a tour. The Zionists jumped the gun on their announcement and it looks like the whole thing is falling true. Thank you to the good people on staff that realize that playing in Israel is like supporting Apartheid South Africa. To those who already bought fake tickets from other Zionists ripping you off. You deserved it!

In the past, JTA has accused BDS activists of misrepresenting victories, so it will be interesting to see how they report this hoax campaign’s hoax victory.

The Jerusalem PostAlgemeiner and JTA should retract their false and misleading stories.

They should also stop following leads from right-wing Zionist propaganda blogs who were the first to promote the hoax campaign outside Facebook.

Hey we got a mention! But “promoting the campaign”? Hardly. Pointing out the antisemitism more like it. There is no campaign. I’ve caught a BDS group promoting antisemitism and EI has no response but to make a serious yet unfounded accusation.

Benjamin Doherty, provide proof of this or drink a steaming hot cup of STFU.

In light of this transparent hoax, serious readers should consider whether The Jerusalem Post and the JTA (and the publications that syndicate it like The Jewish Daily Forward andThe Times of Israel) are reliable sources on Palestine solidarity activism.

Electronic Intifada is getting desperate. They realize this looks really bad for them, BDSHoles and pro palestinian “activists.” But the fact remains, antisemitism is more often than not the motivation behind the pro palestinian “cause.”

  1. This is the flip side to having a “decentralized movement.” Electronic Intifada claims that they are blameless when Paul McCartney gets death threats from BDS-holes, but then they can’t exactly claim that certain segments of the movement don’t “count” because they aren’t EI-approved.

The Guardian is reliable? It is routinely cited and documented for publishing antisemitic trash. That you swallow it tells me all I need to know.

Dave, send in the troll patrol.

  3. “in present-day Israel.” that is an interesting way of putting things? What do they mean “resent day Israel?”. Are they inferring in the future it won’t be in Israel?

    1. I also got caught on that one. As opposed to the Rolling Stones cancelling their performance in ancient Israel? *chuckle*

  5. Funny that Desperate Dave’s resorted to deleting comments, rather than the post itself, which would be a better face-saving maneuver.

The jig’s up, Dave! Everyone – and I do mean everyone – has resigned themselves to the reality of the situation except, apparently, you?

The pro-Israel media don’t need to make up any hoaxes to discredit your BDS heroes over antisemitism. They do a good enough job by themselves.

    2. Deleting comments? Kind of hard when I was offline all day observing the Jewish Sabbath.

Are you capable of even telling the truth about anything?

      1. Good one! Judging from every aspect of this page right here, it doesn’t look like you’re capable of telling the truth to yourself. You’re still in deep denial about this thing, right?

      2. Dave, this guy seems to be trying to have it both ways–I asked him directly whether he was accusing you of setting up the FB page and he said No. Yet, once again, he seems to be accusing you of doing so.

Apparently in your copious spare time… Not!

  7. Keep spinning Joe . It’s happened too many times and fools no one . It’s known as a Greta Berlin moment . One of your merry bunch of turds gets a bit wound up , forgets his lines and ends up posting or linking to an antisemitic comment , video , blog etc .
Then it s all hands to the keyboards and damage limitation mode . ‘ BDS = Antisemitism

  9. Give it up Joe . We know how you operate . After the Greta Berlin fiasco which resulted in plenty of collateral damage , Ali was hauled over the coals for not following the party whip, calling it for what it was – antisemitism . Not that he is above such things , only that he recognised the damage it would cause to the BDS brand ( see Greenstein s attempt to clean the Augean stables )
Now having to toe the line that states any indiscreet remark ie antisemitic is a Zionist plant . Great entertainment watching the squalid attempt at damage limitation by EI . Pass the popcorn

    1. I’m confused. What does “Israel” shoveling weapons to Pinochet (http://books.google.ps/books?id=7v-g21ksdVsC&pg=PA98&lpg=PA98&dq=Augusto+Pinochet+arms+deals+israel&source=bl&ots=V-5BtdVvOR&sig=7Xhs7Otn96Nh1fB_46jKztlQebQ&hl=en&sa=X&ei=OaTWUouZDbawsASYsIGICA&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=Augusto%20Pinochet%20arms%20deals%20israel&f=false ) after his soccer stadium mass executions (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/the-pinochet-affair-i-saw-them-herded-to-their-death-i-heard-the-gunfire-as-they-died-1179543.html ) have to do with anything?

That doesn’t work even as a dull-witted, racist innuendo. Care to explain?

  13. The original FB is almost certainly a hoax. But whose? It has all the hallmarks of a “secret show” scam. Like the Bush “military service records” ploy that destroyed Dan Rather’s career; or the one the Brits pulled on the Nazis, which after the war they made into a snappy spy thriller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Never_Was#Plot_summary

My money’s on Ali et alia. No one who is pro-Israel needs to create a bogus anti-Israel page; there’s already a surfeit of the genuine article. It’s all we can manage just to keep up. Unfortunately for Ali the internet is forever; and it’s only a matter of time before it’s discovered that the originating IP is Ali’s laptop, his girlfriend’s or one faked from some naif hasbarist.

The tale is too good, too over the top. “We’re going to announce our big victory during the next “Apartheid Week”. Hard to imagine juicier bait.
Then there’s amazing turnaround time. Like Jonah’s gourd; it arose in one night and vanished in the next. No sooner was the page noticed then the pre-set puncture was tripped.
“we do not sign letters like this or endorse specific campaigns in the name of the publication.” The two stories appeared here in the same cycle.
You have to imbed that in the original “secret show” to pull it out so fast, and all the rest was collecting dust in his hard drive.

    And what’s the payoff?
If it doesn’t get picked-up then it’s another drip drip in the big lie. If it does; then Ali can crow:
“The perpetrators of the hoax may aim to discredit Palestine solidarity activists by making it appear as if BDS activists disseminate false information and post anti-Semitic and racist content.
Instead, the hoax exposes the low journalistic standards of the publications which reported it as truth.”
We don’t post disinformation, anti-Semitic and racist content. We’re just victims of the vast Zionist conspiracy and shoddy journalism. We tell “The Truth.”
It worked too. Now we’re on the back foot, trying to prove that a hoax is not a hoax when the real question is whose hoax is it. We can expect Ali to beat this to death for years to come.

But what does this tell us about the BDSHoles? They’re desperate. They’re red-faced over ScarJo. The blowback from the ASA’s doublespeak “only the destruction of academic freedom can save academic freedom” is starting to hurt. The livelier impression truth produces in its collision with error is having its effect; and they see that their jig is nearly up. “If we can bait our opponents into a misstep maybe we can recover some momentum, maybe we can call their credibility into question and divert attention from our manifold failures and obscure our methods.”

Beyond this it demonstrates that Ali et alia are peddling a “narrative” that they don’t themselves believe. That’s why they must resort to gamesmanship to prop up their house of cards.
And what better means than the disinformation tricks that are their stock and trade. They are well paid professionals, after all.

    1. You could be right.

I thought it was just so bad and so embarrassing they decided to disown it.

But my mind doesn’t tend to such convolutions, so I guess I miss those things!

      1. Either way it’s another “optical illusion victory”. Either way the scales are starting to fall from people’s eyes.

    2. what is the evidence that it is a hoax? cuz ali says so?

bds is like anonymous…..it is not all that organized, no matter what they would have you believe

      1. My assessment that the original FB page is a hoax is shared by the JTA: http://www.jta.org/2014/02/14/arts-entertainment/facebook-page-urging-stones-boycott-is-apparent-hoax
and the International Business Times: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/israeli-media-falls-hoax-bds-rolling-stones-campaign-1436487

Not that it is impossible for this to have been an own-goal; it just seems to me too perfect. More like a con-man’s tale than the blundering of a hasbarist with more passion than brains.

I am not a trained intelligence analyst; but I am a sucker for these kinds of stories; probably from reading Erving Goffman;s “Strategic Interaction” at an impressionable age and then seeing “The Man who Never Was”.
More recently, Dan Rather got destroyed by just such a stunt when he published evidence that confirmed the widely held belief that GW Bush had skipped out on his reserve service. This was instantaneously proven to be fraudulent (the evidence, that is, not the facts of the matter) when a conservative blogger conveniently noticed that the typeface used was not contemporaneous with the dates of the purported records. It was an old typeface, just not old enough.

I was struck by certain similarities between the Rather Affair and this story.

The rapidity and repleteness of the cry of hoax. The time between when the site was first critiqued here and EI’s claim that it was a hoax was less than 12 hrs. They knew in excruciating detail exactly where the material had been lifted from and had a lengthy, self-righteous piece where they just so happen to be able to accuse the pro-Israel blogosphere of all the propaganda shtick that they regularly commit. (jujitsu)

The fact that the hoax puncture (‘we do not sign letters like this or endorse specific campaigns in the name of the publication.”) was built into the original tale. A clever sleight-of-hand that. These kind of campaigns are what the EI brand is famous for.

How come only those opposed to BDS knew about it? Unlike EI’s propaganda; counter efforts are necessarily reactive. When you come across an example; you call it out. So the poison pill purveyors need only slip it into the infostream, salt in a few anonymous virulent reactions, pick up some genuine outrage, taking care not to endorse it; and wait for a bigger fish (like IC or EoZ or Algemeiner) to take the bait and then. Voila “We noble and pure activists have been victimized by a Zionist HOAX ! !”)

The most striking anomaly is what benefit could such a hoax possibly provide to anyone taking a pro-Israel stance? We’re already up to our ankles in the genuine article; and we’re dancing on our hands. Why add to that noise? By the same token, the payoff for being able to play the snow white victim of a malign Jewish plot is priceless.

And the BSDHoles are desperate to change the conversation away from their latest string of “victories.” The tide is slowly turning. No matter how much powdered sugar you put on a turd sooner or later everybody recognizes it for what it is.

I could be wrong. We’re even less organized than they are. But this stunt could be pulled off on an aglet (not even a shoestring) by anyone who can think three moves ahead in chess.

        1. The JTA article isn’t an “assessment,” it’s a regurgitation of the EI accusation.

That does not invalidate the second part of your analysis, but I just wanted to point that out.

          1. Point taken.
Still, it’s a very good accusation. IMHO that’s what’s wrong with it. It’s too good; and there is absolutely no motive for it to have originated from the pro-Israel side as alleged by EI.
It is just as plausible that this simply evolved out of CYA spin once they realized that one of their little gremlins had wandered too far off the reservation; even for them.
Bottom line. It’s always worthwhile to shine a bright hot light on any manifestation of antisemitism.
The extra cost of fighting propaganda, though, is that you must double down on due diligence.

            1. any moke can create an fb page or a twitter account

comparing this to what cbs news did or did not is absurd

is ali the evil in charge of every bds protest that occurs in the states or europe…is he even aware of them before, during or after they happen

he is a nothing…who would be homeless were it not for donations that come from the jew hating eu members

if its a hoax, it was carried out by one individual having a laff

but i believe that one bdshole took it upon his/herself to set up the page

this should be ez to confirm

            2. It is just as plausible that this simply evolved out of CYA spin once they realized that one of their little gremlins had wandered too far off the reservation; even for them.

That was certainly my assessment, and I still consider that to be the more likely explanation. The second version, although tempting, requires a higher degree of organization and effort than I give them credit for.

              1. I don’t think it does any harm to keep both possibilities in consideration; and to keep alert for other “dirty tricks”.
I’m less inclined to think of them as lazy, incompetent or disorganized. It has taken a lot of time, money, effort and organization to change the public perception of Israel from where it was in 1967 to where it is today.
The selection of emotion laden buzz words to reframe the debate (Occupied for Disputed e.g.) The perversion of human rights language to sanitize atrocities; and how relentlessly they remain on message (both the soft and sweet English and the fire and brimstone Arabic) speaks volumes.
I’m not saying there’s a single “mastermind”; but a very small cadre of committed (or addicted) believers can leverage ancient hatreds and modern discontents to great destructive effect.
Sunlight, reason and persistence are the best antidotes; and, as so often in our history; the stakes are very high.

  14. The original FB is almost certainly a hoax. But whose? It has all the hallmarks of a “secret show” scam. he is a nothing…who would be homeless were it not for donations that come from the jew hating eu members

if its a hoax, it was carried out by one individual having a laff

but i believe that one bdshole took it upon his/herself to set up the page

this should be ez to confirm

The REAL JEW NEWS MEDIA EXPOSED in 2014!

Learn about the “LEARNED ELDERS of ZION”!

FACT: “NOT A SINGLE NEWS ITEM will reach the public
without our control,” states the Protocols of the Learned Elders of
    Zion.

    “Even
now this is attained by us inasmuch as all news items are received by a few
agencies whose offices are entirely ours and will give publicity only to what
we dictate to them,” the Protocols continue.

    In
other words, the mass media form for us our image of the world and then tell
us what to think about that image. According to the Protocols, the way in which the
news is covered — which items are emphasized and which are played down — serve
the interests of the media-masters, the Jews, and not the interests of the
    “Goyim.”
