I want to take the UN seriously. I really do. They have a big building in New York, overlooking the East River. I hear the buffet is wonderful. They’re also near some of those famous New York delis we hear so much about. And they have some of the most important and influential people in some of the world’s great democracies like Saudi Arabia and North Korea.
But as much as I want to take them seriously, I just can’t, because today they released a report blaming Israel for domestic violence against Palestinian women. Er… so let me get this right. Because an abusive Palestinian husband beats up his wife – Israel must be at fault!
I mean I’m sure the UN does a thorough investigative job in all its reports. This thorough investigation process they undertake even produced another report last year which labelled Israel as the worst violator of Women’s Rights in the world! I mean sure… in Saudi Arabia women can’t vote in any election of consequence, not that any voting there makes a difference. And sure… women are not allowed to drive … and sure… they can’t leave homes without a male relative… but does that mean they violate women’s’ rights?? Not according to the UN, because to them Israel is far worse!
So despite the fact that everyone has equal rights in Israel; men, women, Jews, Arabs – this same organisation that says that Israel causes domestic abuse, this same organisation that once passed a resolution that said Zionism is Racism and therefore Jewish self-determination is racist, this same organisation that blames Israel when the Palestinian authorities dump sewage in the ocean, this very same organisation somehow wants us to take it seriously.
I guess we can’t. And with less than half the countries that serve on the UN considered ‘Free’ countries according to US based Freedom House, neither should anyone.
We can’t take the UN seriously, because despite what was probably a noble gesture when they first started out, they are now nothing more than a place for the world’s dictators to get together and have a cheese bagel, while laughing in the face of the freedoms they are supposed to protect.
