Haters Falsely Claim Liverpool FC-Nike Deal as a Victory for BDS

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign has welcomed Liverpool’s decision (confirmed this week) to go with Nike as their kit supplier, claiming it is a victory for BDS.

This week Liverpool FC announced they will be signing Nike, rather than Puma, as their official kit suppliers from next season onwards. PSC welcomes this decision, which comes amidst a growing international campaign for sports teams to boycott Puma over their complicity with Israeli war crimes.

Puma is the main sponsor of the Israel Football Association (IFA), which includes football clubs based in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land. All settlements are considered war crimes under international law.

As one of the world’s top athletic apparel makers, Puma’s sponsorship brings international legitimacy to the IFA and helps maintain its direct involvement in supporting illegal settlements. Over 200 Palestinian teams have called on Puma to end its support for Israel’s military occupation by terminating its sponsorship deal with the IFA – but Puma has ignored these requests.

Summer reports positioned Puma as a strong contender vying for the lucrative new kit deal with Liverpool FC. Over the last six months, however, the international campaign against Puma has gained momentum, with over 30,000 emails sent from football fans urging UK clubs to ditch Puma kit sponsorship deals.

James Tuite, PSC’s Campaigns Officer said:

“We welcome Liverpool FC’s decision not to deal with Puma, and thank the hundreds of PSC supporters who wrote to them about the #BoycottPuma campaign. This is a great start, and we urge other clubs to follow suit. To ensure no complicity with Israeli war crimes, we also call on Liverpool FC to end its partnership with AXA insurance – which has ties to Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.”

Reading this, you’d think that Liverpool’s decision was influenced by pressure from BDS. Yet there is absolutely no evidence of this.

There has been talk of a deal with Nike already since last year, and while it is true they were also at some point in talks with Puma, it seems Nike won out for purely commercial considerations.

Like their marketing reach

In his judgment, Mr Justice Teare pointed to Nike’s plan to use its endorsement deals with superstars, such as basketball player LeBron James, tennis champion Serena Williams and music artist Drake, to also promote Liverpool kits worldwide. The judge decided that Nike’s ability to call on a roster of international celebrities meant it has a marketing reach that cannot be adequately matched by New Balance.

and their global distribution network

Nike have vowed to sell the club’s kit in at least 6,000 stores worldwide of which 500 are Nike owned or controlled…

If BDS was nearly as successful as they claim it is, they wouldn’t need to go around claiming victories that don’t exist.
