Apparently Not Newsworthy: “Anti-Zionists” in Sweden Planned to Burn Torah Scroll

According to Ziv Nevo Kulman, Israel’s Ambassador to Sweden, anti-Zionists-not-antisemites in Sweden planned to burn a Torah scroll at a demonstration in front of the embassy:

According to the Jewish Press, the sacrilege was stopped:

The anti-Israel organizer is an Egyptian author currently living in Sweden who planned to hold the demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm, according to a report broadcast earlier in the day by KAN Reshet Bet, Israel’s public radio station.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Israeli Embassy in Sweden acted immediately and decisively to prevent the shocking and humiliating event from taking place,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The actions included, among other things, contacting the top of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Stockholm Police, as well as the Swedish Embassy in Israel, and activating Jewish and other organizations.

“As a result of our actions, the event at this stage is frozen,” the statement added.

While there is never a good time to plan to burn a Torah scroll, the fact today is International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust adds another level to this, given the burning of Jewish holy books that occurred during that dark time.

Although I am guessing the timing had more to do with the fact a Quran was burned in a right-wing demonstration in Sweden last weekend. And even though that was not the fault of Israel or the Jews, these haters hardly need an excuse. Just inspiration.

We should all be appalled by this, but not entirely surprised, given the Jew-hatred that invariably is behind “anti-Zionism.” Also appalling: the fact this has hardly been reported by the Jewish and Israel press, let alone the mainstream media, except for fringe sites like the Jewish Press, Arutz Sheva, Kipa (Hebrew), and a few blogs.
