Vile and Threatening Messages Directed Against Israeli Soccer Fans Ahead of France-Israel Game

Israel is set play France in a Nations League football match this week, despite this week’s Amsterdam pogrom, and many comments are reaffirming the need for heightened security.

For instance, on France’s RMC Sport Facebook page, a post about the game has generated many sick, antisemitic, and threatening comments, only a sample of which I have included below with their translations to English:

“We need another mustashioed guy to take care of the job.”
“They will receive a warm welcome from the Algerians”
“We hope our Moroccans, Algerian, Malian Tunisian Senegalese and other communities will receive them in the best possible way.”
“Happy hunger games, may the odds be in your favor”
“I hope that they will be treated as needed. They deserve more than an Amsterdam”
“And they will be beaten up again and again… and they will go off crying again and again”
Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, your turn to play the match off the pitch”
“The Algerians and Moroccans will receive you”
“And they will be beaten up again and again… and they will go off crying again and again”
“I hope with all my heart that the French supporters will welcome them with open arms with many fists”
“The sport is in the stadium and after it’s in the streets”
“It reeks of an Amsterdam-style barbecue”
“The riot police are going to send the gas”
“They aren’t ready
“Saint Denis isn’t Amsterdam, you won’t come out alive”

Some seem to transcend hate speech and fall into the category of direct threats, like the following:

“We’ll be there to welcome them you will see”
“We have to give them the short end of the stick”

These are just some from the one post on RMC Sport; I assume there would be much of the same elsewhere and – in all likelihood – Whatsapp and Telegram groups organizing another ambush.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has said he asked the Paris police chief to take the necessary security measures for the November 14 match. Given the nature of the above comments, I sincerely hope this is not just lip service and that the French do not make the same mistake as the Dutch.
